Today, we bring to you the fourth in our series of interviews with top investment gurus. This time we’re featuring Head Trade Tactician Bryan Bottarelli.

Bryan cut his chops in the fierce trading pits of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). Last year, he recreated that exciting and often profitable atmosphere with The War Room, where he and co-founder Karim Rahemtulla lead a band of merry traders to profits nearly every week.

Their record is impressive. Since launching The War Room last year, Karim and Bryan have completed some 900 trade recommendations for 702 winners – a win rate of 78%.

Bryan lives in Massachusetts with his wife and two daughters.

Hey, Bryan. Thanks for speaking with me today. You’ve got an interesting history, which I think begins at the CBOE. Can you tell us how you started as a trader and how you moved from there into the newsletter business?

Well, for me – I got lucky. I started my trading career clerking for the top trader in the Apple Computer pit on the CBOE in Chicago – which happened to take place during the heart of the dot-com boom.

So I learned how to trade volatility directly from one of the top traders in the world, all during one of the most volatile periods in market history. Everything just happened to line up, and I was off to the races from that point on.

And then comes The War Room. What was the inspiration to start that, and what were you trying to create?

The inspiration for The War Room came directly from my early days trading on the CBOE. You see, being in a trading pit, standing eight hours a day buying and selling… It’s hard work. But at the same time, it was also very rewarding. The sense of community in the pit, the feeling of sharing ideas to make winning trades – that all became obsolete once technology evolved and floor trading (as we know it) became all but extinct.

So, in a way, what we’ve created inside The War Room is an innovative new way for like-minded people to all come together, share their ideas and collaborate to achieve one common goal: to make winning trades. It’s like the reinvention of the new, modern 2.0 version of the trading pits. And I can tell you, nowhere else in the world of financial publishing will you find something quite like what we’ve created in The War Room.

That’s pretty cool! Can you tell Investment U readers what a typical day looks like in The War Room?

Sure – that’s simple. Every single day, you’ll find winning trading or investing ideas. Sometimes, that may be a quick “in and out” trade from me. Just the other day, one member made more than 600% in one day trading my recommendation on Lemonade (NYSE: LMND). The week before, another member used a strategy I often use (called the Win-Both-Ways technique) to make 350% overnight trading Stitch Fix (Nasdaq: SFIX). And earlier this week, my partner, Karim, made two winning trades on his longer-term picks on IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Party City (NYSE: PRTY). So, basically, every day offers you new opportunities to build substantial wealth.

You mentioned your partner in The War Room, Karim Rahemtulla. You two have very different but complementary trading styles. Can you tell us how that works?

Sure. Karim and I have a great partnership. Coming from the CBOE, I trade fast. That’s just how I learned – using technical trading patterns that happen instantly – and that suits my style. Sometimes, that means I can be in and out of a trade the same day.

But Karim is different. He’s a fundamentals guy. He uncovers market pricing inefficiencies and exploits them. His trades have a longer-term holding time – sometimes three to six months. So when you combine my fast-moving technical trades with Karim’s medium-term fundamental trades, you’re left with two powerful strategies that “keep the register ringing,” as we say inside the trading room, at all times.

I’m particularly intrigued by how you can set up a trade that pays off no matter which way the stock moves. Can you explain briefly how that works?

Sure. That goes back to my Win-Both-Ways strategy that I mentioned above – the one that just made a member more than 350% overnight. I just posted a new training video that outlines the entire method. Your readers can watch it right here.

Looking forward, what do you make of the markets going into 2021? And is that a good situation for the kind of trading you do?

The only thing I know for certain is that market volatility is here to stay. The days of a stagnant market are over. And using what we’ve created inside The War Room, there’s no better way to learn how to trade the up and down moves – IN REAL TIME – than being among our group of like-minded readers.

And finally, you’re a Chicago guy and a sports nut, if I remember correctly. I think you said your dream outing is sitting on the floor at a Chicago Bulls game at the United Center. Do I have that right? Have you gotten to do that often?

Oh my gosh. Now you’re speaking my language! Yes, growing up in Chicago, Michael Jordan was my idol and still is to this day. In fact, one of his most inspirational quotes constantly fuels me to become a better trader:

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

So once a year, I like to treat myself to sitting on the floor of a Bulls game. And Matt, let me tell you, there’s no experience like it in all of sports. Your proximity to the game and to the players – it’s unmatched.
